Both Toyota and Subaru are known for their highly dependable performances, allowing you to get the most of your travels for years to come. This is thanks to a suite of smartly engineered equipment under the hood of each model.

In the Subaru Ascent, you’ll find the 2.4L turbocharged engine that pumps out an impressive 260 horsepower. This lets you tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped while still offering a smooth drive backed by power.

If you’re looking for oomph where it counts, however, the Toyota Highlander might be the way to go. With its standard 3.5L V6 engine, this model revs up a whopping 295 horsepower and can also tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Want something supremely efficient for your family drives? The Highlander is also available with a 243-horsepower hybrid engine, allowing you to stay on the road for longer. Unfortunately, the Ascent doesn’t offer a hybrid configuration.

Highlander vs Ascent: Interior Technologies

Inside the Toyota Highlander and Subaru Ascent, you’ll have seating for up to eight and ample cargo room. However, what’s really impressive is the suite of modern technologies that keep your commutes entertaining and connected.

The Highlander comes standard with an 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system. On this system, you’ll have Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ smartphone integration, a 6-speaker sound system, SiriusXM® Radio, and Amazon Alexa capability. You can also upgrade to the available 12.3-inch touchscreen system that adds on Dynamic Navigation.

The Subaru Ascent has a similar system. Although, at the standard level, you’ll only find a 6.5-inch display on the dashboard. You will find Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ standardly, but Amazon Alexa isn’t available for this model. For a bigger dashboard screen, you’ll have to move up to a higher trim, but the largest touchscreen you’ll find is eight inches.

Toyota and Subaru both produce incredibly safe vehicles and it’s in part thanks to a suite of driver-assistive technologies across all trim levels.

In the 2022 Highlander, you’ll have Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5+, which includes the following:

• Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
• Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
• Lane Tracing Assist
• Road Sign Assist
• Automatic High Beams

The Ascent offers a similar package with its EyeSight® driver-assistive technologies. This includes much of the above, like a Pre-Collision Braking System, Lane Departure Warning, High Beam Assist, and Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control. However, what you won’t find is Road Sign Assist and Lane Tracing Assist, regrettably.
